Last week’s two most critically acclaimed games are also the biggest sellers, with BioShock infinite becoming the second biggest launch of the year so far.

Too often we write these chart stories only to see undeserving games rewarded with sales success and great game banished to the lower regions of the top 40, but this week things are different and the chart positions have been doled out largely in order of merit.

BioShock Infinite is now the second biggest launch of the year, behind only Tomb Raider, with the new game selling 9,000 more copies than its predecessor BioShock 2. Perhaps because the original game was an Xbox 360 exclusive for over a year it’s Microsoft’s console that’s earned the lion’s share of retail sales, at 64 per cent. By comparison the PlayStation 3 only accounted for 31 per cent and the PC for 5 per cent.
