I’ve been a big fan of the Saiyuki series for years, so I was really excited when I heard a Saiyuki Gaiden OVA was being made. Saiyuki Gaiden is a prequel to the Saiyuki series, based on the manga by Minekura Kazuya. Saiyuki Gaiden is a short, action/drama OVA that focuses on the characters Goku, Konzen Douji, Kenren Taisho, and Tenpou Gensui and their plan to escape from Heaven. This is a beautiful anime, with fascinating artwork astoundingly accurate to Minekura’s art in her manga. While I don’t wish to give anything away, I must say that this anime, although somewhat rushed, is packed with emotion that will make your eyes tear up with both wonderful joy and horrible sadness.Although it isn’t necessary to watch or read Saiyuki before watching Saiyuki Gaiden, I recommend watching Saiyuki first. The reason for this is because watching or reading Saiyuki first allows the audience or reader to develop feelings for the characters, which will make Gaiden all the more meaningful and dramatic.Ratings:Animation: 3.5/5 stars. The animation in this OVA isn’t the worst I’ve seen, but it could have been better. It definitely beats the animation in Saiyuki Reload and Saiyuki Reload Gunlock.Art: 5/5 stars. Visually, this anime is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen. The characters are drawn exactly like Minekura’s recent artwork, and if anyone is familiar with her work they’ll know that it’s beauty is nearly impossible to imitate. The only funny thing that I can point out about this anime’s art is the characters’ chins, but that’s just one of Minekura’s quirks that makes her art so unique.Story: 4/5 stars. Honestly, I was a little disappointed to see that the first episode skipped over a lot of important scenes in the manga, but as usual, you can’t expect the movie/anime to be better than the book. Since it was an OVA, it had a limited amount of episodes to fit the whole series into. Despite the beginning being rushed, the other two episodes were filled to the brim with emotion, which made me forget about my initial disappointment.Overall, this OVA was brilliant. It is a must-see for any fan of the Saiyuki series.
